Abstract
The talk will begin with an overview of the principles and elements of design as they apply to photography, and a discussion of what makes a photo "good", and how "good photos" are best understood as "photos with emotion," and not in terms of their technical merit or adherence to any particular design principle. We will touch on the role and importance of photography in culture, and the personal benefits of practicing photography, with approaches that bring enjoyment and fulfillment when practicing photography. In the second half, We will discuss photography in the context of film as our media of expression, why one might choose film over the convenience of digital, the though process that goes into taking a photo on film and how it differs from using a digital camera, and an overview of film development and darkroom processes (and maybe chemistry, if we have time). Expect audience participation and some sample equipment to be present!
