Hey! I'm a CS grad student who completed his Masters in January 2006!
Next I'll start my PhD here as well and continue to focus on various
aspects of parallel programming and distributed systems. I was a TA for
the longest time doing mostly C++ and networking courses, but more recently
I've shifted more towards research. They've found a closet in our ivory
tower and locked me in it. I'm working mostly on high performance
computing using standard commodity operating systems, processors, and
networking.
2005 was insane. Last June and July (2005) I worked as a member of the MPICH2
development team at Argonne National Lab near Chicago. Our team is affiliated
with the Laboratory for Advanced Numerical Software in the Mathematics
and Computer Science Division. Then in the fall, I presented our UBC team's work
at Supercomputing 2005. We made some great connections there. Since,
we've been continuing our research. We have an excellent team so it is very
much what tempted me to stay.
I'll be presenting in Greece in April 2006 at HCW 2006 and HIPS 2006, each
workshops at IPDPS. I am very much looking forward to returning to Europe.
Once there, my focus will shift to supporting the US national team for the
World Cup held in Germany. We'll be in the stands for US v Czech Republic
and US v Italy!
I have been in Vancouver two years, spending a lot of time
playing soccer. I am always looking for a game here, pick-up or on a
team. Also, I have recently started sailing and wind-surfing, so if you
want to go, I'm down. Now I am learning how to play Go, and looking
for victims (actually I currently suck). I actually just picked up playing
squash too, and amazingly I'm already the world champion.
I like going to concerts too. If you know any awesome bands, you are
obligated to tell me, and then I'll give you my know-it-all opinion. I
have been listening a lot to Neurosis, Stars, Armor for Sleep, Mars Volta,
The Sound of Animals Fighting, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Wolf Parade, The
Forecast and Architecture in Helsinki. And I love Notorious B.I.G.
What do I look like? My twin is the drummer for Las Oreja de Van Gogh, but I'm
much cooler. But he speaks Spanish better than me. Still, his band is named
after a famous human dismemberment. Loser. Some people say I look like
Josh Groban and a 20-something Pete Townshend too. Even Sacha Kljestan...
Those people should not be trusted.
