Welcome to my blog...It's more of an occasional-random-quirky-thought blog or a check-out-this-cool-link blog than one of those this-is-what-i-had-for-breakfast-today-and-these-are-my-feelings-about-life blogs and it's definitely not one of those awful i'm-useful-and-have-important-things-to-say-and-i'm-contributing-to-society blogs. Enjoy.

10 Years in Vancouver
I have become quite aware recently that I've been living in Vancouver for a decade. I moved out here in January 1998 to start my Master's degree at UBC. At the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) meeting last night they had a mini-celebration of my ten years of involvement with that organization. Nancy and AMS Catering put together a meal with my favourite AMS foods (Sushi and Chinese food) and the archivist / researcher Sheldon (author of Remember, Remember) compiled a list of some of my more memorable contributions over the years in a powerpoint presentation. I could have done without having some of that stuff revisited, but I guess it's all a matter of public record somewhere.

2008: The Year of the Thesis (and the Rat)
I absolutely MUST finish my PhD thesis this year, and so I'm making a several New Year's resolutions along those lines. For some reason, if I post them here they'll seem more "real", so here I go:
  • I'm not scheduling any significant trips or vacations this year
  • I'm only playing poker once a month, and I'm not watching poker on TV or reading any more poker books this year
  • I'm curbing my TV watching habits in general and reducing the number of shows I TiVo / PVR
  • I'm not playing any video games
  • I'm only websurfing / Facebooking / playing Scrabulous once a day
